Unlock Lexis Digital eBooks - Carol Hassler

Last month we announced the arrival of our new ebook collection, Lexis Digital, a collection of eBooks that you can read from home or the office. Visit our eBooks page to browse the entire collection, or head directly to the book you want to read using links in our catalog.

One-stop service

Our catalog is a great one-stop resource for all the ways you can read a book - whether it's online or in print in our libraries. Get to it through the search box on our home page, or from the Search menu on our site. Select "Books and More" to search the catalog.

Head to our catalog to find links to online books. For Lexis Digital books, look for a link at the top of the catalog record with the title of the book and a link to Lexis Digital. It's that easy!

Pictured above: Employment in Wisconsin

Select the Lexis Digital link to log in with your library card. This link directs you to the book in Lexis Digital or, in the case of a several-volume set, you'll arrive at the entire set of books.

For individual books or sets, you can quickly use the contents or search box on the Lexis Digital page to browse or search for specific terms or concepts. Even if you prefer to read from our print books, the full-set keyword search can be a great option to review a large set of books for narrow terms or law references.

Simple Search in HeinOnline - Beth Bland

If you've been on HeinOnline lately, you might have noticed a big change: the tabs across the top of the search box are gone. You may be wondering how this affects your searches in HeinOnline.

Simply enter your search terms in the box and the system will generate options, such as a title, catalog, or a citation search. Choose how you'd like to search and HeinOnline will create a list of results or send you directly to a cited document. The tabs may be gone, but the ability to search by citation or title is easily accessed from the main search box.

Bonus tip! Email articles

HeinOnline constantly creates new educational videos and guides to help researchers make the most of the database. Our tip of the month is to email articles to yourself directly from HeinOnline. This tutorial about how to email yourself a PDF explains how to do this.

Tech Tip - Heidi Yelk

Save your library barcode number

If you're a regular reader of WSLL @ Your Service, you know the library has recently added more remote digital resources. A new login page gives you access to all of our databases after entering your library card number. You may be wondering how you can save your library barcode number when your browser does not prompt you to "save password." I've heard from a few users who are experiencing this in Chrome or Firefox.

One option is a browser add-on (Firefox) or browser extension (Chrome) called AutoFill. This tool bills itself as "form autofill on steroids." It's very similar to your browser's autofill but allows you to create different profiles for different pages. When invoked, the extension automatically fills in the fields without having to make dropdown choices, which is typical with browser autofill.

To use this extension, download Autofill for your browser (Firefox, Chrome). Browse to a database link on our website, such as HeinOnline from our Articles & Journals page. Right click on the Autofill button in the menu bar and then choose "add rules for this page." Fill out the form with your barcode number, create a new profile name, and then select "generate autofill rules." For visits to the database login page, right click on the Autofill button; choose "execute profile" and the profile name to autofill your library card number.

June Snapshot

Socially Distanced Reading Room

We're getting ready to welcome researchers back into the library! One of the changes we've made to help our users stay safe is to create more space between seats at our reading room tables. Temporarily removing some chairs improves social distancing opportunities, while still giving researchers lots of space to spread out and work.

We are accepting snapshots! Do you have a photo highlighting libraries, attractions or points of historical interest? Send your photo the editor at carol.hassler@wicourts.gov to be included in a future issue.
